# RFID Tags
## What Are RFID Tags?
RFID tags are small electronic devices that use radio frequency identification technology to store and transmit data wirelessly to an RFID reader. These tags consist of a microchip and an antenna, enabling them to communicate with readers over various distances, depending on the frequency and design. In my personal experience working with inventory management systems, implementing RFID tags dramatically improved our tracking accuracy and operational efficiency compared to traditional barcode systems.
## Types and Technical Specifications of RFID Tags
### Passive RFID Tags
Passive tags do not have an internal power source. They are activated by the electromagnetic energy transmitted from an RFID reader. Common frequencies include:
- **Low Frequency (LF): 125-134 kHz**
- Read range: Up to 10 cm
- Common applications: Animal tracking, access control
- **High Frequency (HF): 13.56 MHz**
- Read range: Up to 1 meter
- Common standards: ISO 15693, ISO 14443A/B (used in NFC)
- **Ultra-High Frequency (UHF): 860-960 MHz**
- Read range: Up to 12 meters
- Common protocols: EPCglobal Gen2 (ISO 18000-6C)
### Active RFID Tags
Active tags contain their own power source (battery), allowing for longer read ranges (up to 100 meters) and additional capabilities like sensors. They typically operate at:
- **UHF: 433 MHz, 915 MHz (region dependent)**
- **Microwave: 2.45 GHz**
